There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the border from next door Thailand, where gambling den gambling is not legal. Eight casinos are established in a generally tiny space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime location, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million, and there are a few restrictions constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; although, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are allegedly necessary to cross, there are ways around this, as is real of many border crossings.

The original Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau gambling hall, highlights one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 60 table games. The Naga gambling den is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel building that highlights many comforts on top of the gambling den, which contains 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and 88 gaming tables.
